How skin tag removal works

Skin tags are treated by advanced electrolysis. A sterile probe is placed against the narrow stalk at the base of the tag and delivers a small, controlled current. That closes the tiny blood vessels supplying it, so the tag is cut off from its blood supply rather than cut off with a blade.

Each tag takes a matter of seconds. A small scab forms and separates on its own over the following one to two weeks, leaving flat skin behind. Several tags are usually treated in the same appointment.

About skin tags

Skin tags are very common and completely harmless. They form where skin folds, creases or rubs.

Where they tend to appear

The neck, underarms, eyelids, groin and under the bust are the usual sites, along with anywhere a collar, bra strap or waistband sits.

Why they appear

Friction, genetics and hormones are the main drivers. They become more common with age, during pregnancy, and alongside conditions such as diabetes.

What can be treated

Tags on the face, neck and body, several in one sitting. Milia, thread veins and blood spots respond to the same method.

When to see your GP first

We treat blemishes we are confident are skin tags, and nothing else. If something is changing in size, shape or colour, if it bleeds, itches or crusts, if the border is irregular, or if there is simply any doubt about what it is, we will ask you to see your GP before we go near it.

That is not box-ticking. Removing an undiagnosed lesion destroys the very thing a doctor would need to look at. If you are at all unsure, start with your GP and come to us once you know what you are dealing with.

Your first appointment

The first appointment is a consultation and patch test, not a full removal session. We look at each blemish, confirm it is something we can safely treat, agree what you want removed and treat a small test area. You leave with a plan and an honest price, and you can see how your skin reacts before committing to anything further.

Questions

Is it a straightforward drive from Brampton?

It is around 14 miles. North on the A1198, then the A14 westbound, then follow signs for Cambourne, then Upper Cambourne. Most people are here in about 27 minutes.

When is the best time to travel from Brampton?

The A14 around Huntingdon is slow at peak times. Late morning onwards is a much easier run.

Does it hurt?

There is a brief sharp heat as each tag is treated, gone in a second or two. Most people find it very manageable, and the patch test shows you exactly what to expect first.

Will the tag come back?

A tag that has been fully treated does not return. New ones can appear elsewhere, because the cause is friction and genetics rather than anything left behind.

Will I be left with a mark?

A small scab forms and lifts on its own within a week or two. Leaving it alone and keeping it out of strong sunlight gives the cleanest result.

How do I know it is a skin tag and not a mole?

That is what the consultation is for. If there is any doubt at all we will not treat it, and we will send you to your GP first.

Can I get this done on the NHS?

Skin tag removal is normally classed as cosmetic, so it is rarely available on the NHS unless a tag is causing a genuine medical problem.
